The Theron Rogerson Scholarship
In Memory of Theron Rogerson
AWARD:
In memory of Theron Rogerson, Granville High School '21, we would like to offer an annual award of $2,000 to a graduating senior GHS male student athlete who embodies the spirit of competition, the determination to improve, and shares the joy of his teammates success. We have in mind senior Track and Field and/or Cross Country student athletes who plan to continue competing in college, but it is open for all senior male student athletes who embody that spirit to apply.
ABOUT THERON ROGERSON:
Theron made a big impact on and off the field. He was a positive force, and although his drive to better himself and achieve his goals was obvious, he relished in others achieving their goals and lifted others up when they were down. Theron participated in Cross Country and Track and Field as a Middle School student athlete, then turned his focus solely to Track and Field in High School. As he was getting taller and stronger his Junior year, he decided to put his effort into the hurdle events, then the pandemic struck and the Outdoor Track and Field season was cancelled. He was making great gains his senior year during indoor Track and Field, when he suffered a broken leg in mid February and missed the end of Indoor and half of Outdoor Track and Field seasons. While hobbled by the broken leg, he continued to work on upper body strength and support his team. He made a slow comeback, fought his way into shape, and ended the year with two LCL championships in the 110HH and 300IH races.
Above all else, Theron was a light hearted and kind soul who loved his teammates and classmates, and the Track and Field Blue Aces.
HISTORY OF THE FUND:
The Theron Rogerson Scholarship fund started as a remembrance of his passion for Track and Field, the Granville Blue Aces, and his teammates. The intention is to extend this Scholarship Fund for a minimum of 19 years, the amount of time we were blessed with the joy of having Theron walk with us on this earth.
This fund should also highlight the risk of suicide. Theron found so much joy in life and was in awe of the beauty and intricacies of nature, with an eye on the future, which made his choice so shocking and the reverberations through the community so deep. We will never understand why Theron made the choice he did, but as stressors mounted and emotions were raw, that most horrible decision he could have made, was made. Theron’s light should shine on the fact that when life feels overwhelming and that the troubles are too big, there are people who can help and that with honesty about what you are feeling and why, no problems are too big to overcome.
